Lama Kathy first explains that The Heart Sutra is part of the Mahayana teachings on ultimate truth. We begin our path by engaging in practices to calm the mind and generate loving kindness and compassion. These practices help us reduce our ego clinging and associated negative habitual patterns which are the source of our suffering. The ultimate truth presented in The Heart Sutra completes this process by providing the wisdom that completely uproots ego clinging. However, when we first encounter these teachings we may find them baffling. When we chant, we think, “What does this mean?” We continue to chant The Heart Sutra because the essence of wisdom is imparted in these words. The words are dualistic, but point at the truth. When we recite daily, we learn these words by heart and even if we don’t understand, they permeate our being and provide a framework for wisdom. Unlearning habitual habits and fixation starts with this framework. Lama Kathy teaches The Heart Sutra based on Bokar Rinpoche’s commentary in Profound Wisdom of the Heart Sutra and Other Teachings. Lama Kathy’s commentary on Bokar Rinpoche’s teaching is brilliant and engaging. Rather than simply repeating what is said in this book, she helps us understand the meaning of Rinpoche’s words and by providing in-depth explanations.
