These are the first Dzogchen teachings that The Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche has presented in the context of Sangha Retreat. In these talks, Rinpoche provides detailed instructions on the preliminary practices of Dzogchen. These teachings come from rare and precious Dzogchen texts, including The Excellent Chariot: A Vehicle for the Path to Liberation. Written by Ngeton Tenzin Zangpo, the 3rd Dzogchen Rinpoche, this text is a commentary on the Khandro Nyingtig, “The Heart Essence of the Dakinis” which is part of a larger compilation of Longchenpa’s Dzogchen teachings from the 14th Century. In turn, the Khandro Nyingtig teachings are a concentration of the Dzogchen teachings of Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tsogyal. In the first twelve talks, Rinpoche began by teaching on listening well and on the qualities of gurus and disciples. He then taught the preliminary practices of Refuge and Bodhichitta, Vajrasattva, Mandala Offering and Guru Yoga in the practice tradition of Dzogchen Monastery. These instructions included teachings on the meaning of refuge and the refuge practice visualizations as well as the relationship between the four preliminary practices and the five contemplations on Precious Human Birth, Impermanence, Karma, the Sufferings of Samsara and The Benefits of Liberation. These talks also include guided meditation and commentaries on The Essential Points of Mahamudra, Dzogchen and the Middle Way by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, Heart Counsel of the Fool by Shakbar Tsokdruk Randrol, and The Crucial Point of Practice by Patrul Rinpoche. In the last four talks, Rinpoche teaches the Physical, Verbal and Mental Special Preliminaries for Dzogchen Practice. Translation was provided by Cortland Dahl and Tyler Dewar. Restrictied Teachings: Listening to the first 12 talks is restricted to those students who are members of Nalandabodhi. Listening to the last 4 talks is restricted to only those students who attended the 2006 or 2007 Nalandabodhi Sangha Retreat or by permission of DPR.
