Description

Buddhist meditation aims to calm the mind and help us recognize mind's ultimate nature. This weekend program by Lama Kathy Wesley covers both sutra and tantra-based meditations, and offers techniques for using these meditations both on the cushion and in our daily lives. Lama Kathy begins with an overview of the Three Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma: To gain understanding of buddha nature, and see the genius in the progression of the Buddha’s reasoning and compassion, giving the appropriate teaching to each individual or audience. She then describes the Three Yanas: The Hinayana and Mahayana focus on creating the causes that will bring about the result of spiritual awakening. The Hinayana approach of self liberation is generating good karma, developing mindfulness and taming the mind with meditation. The Mahayana, the practice for the liberation of all beings, stresses love and compassion, and wisdom. The third Yana, Vajrayana, (also known as Tantrayana or Mantrayana) consists of practices that are from the point of view of the result, spiritual awakening, that allow a more direct experience of buddha nature. Lama Kathy bases her teachings on the practices upon The Great Path of Awakening by Jamgong Kontrul the Great (Ken McCloud translation) and Vivid Awareness by Khechen Thrangu Rinpoche. To provide a general context she used Traleg Rinpoche’s Essence of Buddhism, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche’s Five Buddha Families and Eight Consciousnessess and his commentary upon Jamgon Kongtrul the Great’s Creation and Completion.

Included as a bonus with this teaching is Lama Kathy’s public talk: Buddhist Mind, Modern Conflicts. Conflict seems to be at center stage in much of society these days; from family life and athletics to politics and reality television, conflict seems to be a driving force in nearly every aspect of our lives. How can we prepare our minds for working with all this conflict? Some of the time-tested methods of mind training from the historical Buddha may help. Lama Kathy discusses these issues and methods with warmth, humor, and great insight. Four talks and one bonus talk on one MP3 CD.

Features
  • MP3CD Recordings
MP3CDs look like ordinary CDs, but contain compressed audio files. While a regular audio CD holds a maximum of only 80 minutes of recorded audio, an identical-looking MP3CD can easily hold the audio files from an entire weekend or even week-long teaching. MP3CDs can be played in a computer and/or the audio files can be downloaded into an iPod or similar device. MP3CDs may also be played on a portable MP3CD player. Most ordinary CD players, such as the CD player in most older cars (roughly 2005 and earlier), will not play MP3CDs. Many but not all cars 2006 or later do have MP3-capable CD players. Any car or home stereo CD player that is capable of playing an MP3CD will have “MP3” or “MP3-WMA” clearly marked on the front of it.
  • The MP3CDs available for sale on this web site are all clearly labeled and packaged in a clear case. The audio files on them have proper ID3 tag information, which means that on a computer, iPod or similar device the audio files will display (and can be searched by) Album (Title of teaching), Song (Talk number within a teaching) and Artist (Teacher).
