In order to rest in natural awareness, we need to understand both the meaning of natural awareness and how to progress towards realizing natural awareness. In these five talks, Jim Scott combines teachings from two texts, Maitreya’s Distinguishing Phenomena and Pure Being and Karmapa Rangjung Dorje’s Mahamudra Aspiration Prayer. Maitreya’s text provides the basis for practicing mahamudra and dzogchen by teaching the view required for attaining the result. Karmapa’s text teaches the result. Jim Scott begins by pointing out the importance of motivation for progressing on the path to natural awareness. On the basis of Maitreya’s text, he explains our mistaken dualistic perceptions that cause us to suffer and prevent us from realizing nature of mind. His commentary includes teachings from the Mind Only, Vaibhashika, and Sautantrika philosophical schools that explain how confused perceptions manifest in meditation and post-meditation. He also teaches how understanding the view leads to realizing natural awareness in meditation and how the post-meditation world appears to one who has realized pure view. Jim Scott provided numerous opportunities for participants to ask questions. Many of the verses he taught on were put to song. The handouts on which these teachings are based are included with these DVDs. Five talks on five DVDs
