There are so many great things to say about Acharya Lama Tenpa Gyaltsen’s 2017-18 Winter Retreat
teaching that it is hard to know what to emphasize. He begins with questions inviting us to contemplate
why we are practicing dharma. What is our aspiration? However, the main topic covered in these
teachings is the wisdom of realizing emptiness. Acharya approaches this topic primarily through
questions, contemplations and analysis. Why don’t we experience buddhanature? What is blocking us?
Appearances? Karma? Kleshas? Conceptual mind? What is the primary cause of our suffering in
samsara? Acharya skillfully leads us to the conclusion that the primary cause of suffering is ignorance
(not knowing ultimate truth) and that the antidote for not knowing is the wisdom that realizes
emptiness. The rest of the teaching continues with questions and analysis exploring the meaning of
emptiness, mistaken views of emptiness, the meaning of interdependence and the interaction between
emptiness and interdependence. Acharya’s penetrating logic furthers our understanding of these topics.
