Mahamudra (together with Dzogchen) is the highest teaching available. In order to practice Mahamudra we need extensive instructions and transmissions. Nonetheless, the Aspiration Prayer of Mahamudra by the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje, is accessible to all levels of practitioners because it presents the view, meditation, and fruition of Mahamudra in a series of prayers aspiring to connect with these teachings, gain confidence in them, cut through our confusion, practice well, and by doing so realize the nature of our mind. In this weekend teaching, Jim Scott teaches the verses of this prayer on the basis of his personal study and practice, and by referring to the teachings of realized masters, including Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche and Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. Jim Scott explains the words of this aspiration prayer in great detail, clarifying the meaning of the aspiration prayer by pointing out the difference between our ordinary confused view and the view being presented in the text. This teaching included opportunities for the students who were present to ask questions.
In the late 1970s, the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, directed Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche to found a shedra (institute for Buddhist studies) in Europe. There Khenpo Rinpoche educated Westerners in the classic Indian Buddhist and Tibetan Karma Kagyu Buddhist traditions. At the same time he taught these students to be translators of the Tibetan language. This activity was not only to preserve these traditions but also to make them available to Westerners for practice. Jim Scott was among the first group of translators at the shedra and he continues to be a senior heart student of Khenpo Rinpoche. At Rinpoche’s request, Jim Scott translated and put to melody many songs of realization. In addition, he has translated numerous Buddhist texts and teaches widely.
