Description
Genuine listening, especially in situations of conflict, is grounded in loving kindness. Skillful communication is not possible without first truly listening. It all begins with letting go of ego-centric habitual patterns of response and opening our hearts and minds to others. For this reason, Deborah starts these sessions with listening both as a general skill and and in the context of conflict before providing practices and methods of mindful speaking. Deborah's presentation draws from a variety of sources including the teachings of Thich Naht Han and Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, Verbal De-escalation techniques used in law enforcement training, a mediation between an incarcerated criminal and his victim, speaking techniques drawn from Sharon Ellison's work on non-defensive communication, and research on the benefits of apology to resolve legal disputes. With humor and kindness, Deborah helps us see that practicing listening and communicating techniques requires first working with our minds to transform habitual patterns and confusion into loving kindness and compassion. Formal practices including Shamatha, Tonglen, and Sitting with Emotion are the tools for this transformation. Deborah also encourages us to recognize that the relationships we have with sangha and family members provide precious opportunities to let go of our confusion, open our hearts, and interact skillfully. These lively sessions include numerous small group exercises, open and honest discussions, visualization and contemplation practices, and question and answer sessions. Background materials are provided on a CD with these DVD recordings. Six sessions on six DVDs plus written materials in PDF format on a CD.
